PREVIEWS: Various short previews I did for The Argus

SICK JOY

Newcastle-born but currently Brighton based band Sick Joy to play Concorde 2 in mid January of next year. With their melancholy heavy pop sound with loud and grunge influenced choruses, Sick Joy is a band for the likes of Nirvana and Pixies. After their debut single of 'Stars' hitting over 3000 spotify hits back in April 2017, the song was featured on BBC Introducing with Nick Roberts. Selling out their first ever Brighton show at Patterns in 2016, the trio is now back to blow the roof off everyone's favorite Brighton based venue.

FOREVER CULT

Forever Cult is an energetic four piece band from Leeds. Their genre can only be described as alternative rock with strong punk rock influences. Releasing their first EP in 2013, they have been featured in NME, DIY, HMV and had their music played on BBC 1, 6Music and Amazing Radio. Following the release of their newest EP "Homewrecker", Forever Cult has announced a selection of dates which also includes dates with Pulled Apart By Horses. NME describes the band as "searing riffs and snarling vocals ear-splitting tunes”, and that can also most definitely be said about their live shows.

FOR THE WIN

Straight from sunny San Diego of California, USA, five piece For The Win is a generic pop punk band with coherent metalcore influences. Signed with well-known American record label Victory Records, For The Win went from a small local band desperately trying to get their name out there, to touring all around the world supporting In Her Own Words. Because of its energetic sound with heavy, distorted guitars, the band has some similarities to bands dominating the scene like The Story So Far and A Day To Remember. Alternative Press describe their live shows as "sweat-soaked, pit-ready punk and metalcore", which makes it a night you will soon to forget.

DRENGE

Straight from the village of Castleton in the district of Derbyshire, DRENGE is a three piece that definitely will make you to wear plaid shirts and ripped jeans while headbanging to their angsty vocals and distorted guitars. With their hit "F**kabout" hitting over two million and a half listens on Spotify, DRENGE have hit the road for one of their biggest UK tours ever. Playing The Old Market on the 28th of April, make sure you get tickets before they completely sell out, because this is an alternative rock event you do not want to sleep on!

MOVEMENTS

After playing a single show in 2015, record label Fearless Records immediately gave MOVEMENTS a record deal. This alternative rock band with a hint of emo and spoken word is touring the UK with their newest release of Feel Something, their debut full-length album released in late 2017. With influences from bands defining the emo genre like My Chemical Romance and Underoath, MOVEMENTS is a band specializing in emotional choruses with melancholy lyrics that will not leave a single person standing still on the floor of the cramped basement that is Sticky Mike's Frog Bar.

WE ARE SCIENTISTS

We Are Scientists finally return to Concorde 2 to commemorate the release of their sixth studio album, "Megaplex", dropping on April 27th. This two-piece formed in Berkeley, California in 2000 and is a prime example of everything great about indie and alternative rock. Their second album, "Brain Thrust Mastery" charted number 11 in the UK album chart, with two top 40 singles from the album. The band state their influences as David Bowie and Velvet Underground, and it is clearly audible in their music just how much those major artists have inspired their sound. Come celebrate the new album with this terrific indie band – it will be nothing you won't regret.

HOLYGLAM

If you fancy going to shows to bang your head until it hurts, HOLYGLAM is not something you should miss out on. This is a four-piece band of raw, unfiltered punk rock that will take you back in time to punk’s glory days in the 70s. Following one of their first released singles, “The Game”, HOLYGLAM are playing Brighton for the second time this year. BBC 6 Music describes their music as “Sqealing aural mayhem” and sounds like it could be a descendant of Sex Pistols, so if you like your punk heavy. don’t miss HOLYGLAM at The Quadrant on 28th of November.

ASAHI NODA

Straight from the grand country of Japan, Brighton based singer-songwriter Asahi Noda is set to play Green Door Store on the 13th of December. With the sound of an acoustic guitar along with her sweet but jazzy voice, Noda often blows people away with her powerful vocals. Her singles “Shadow” and “Smoky Moon” reached over 2000s listens on Spotify and has melodies that easily gets stuck in your head. Even though “Smoky Moon”’s lyrics are mostly in Japanese, the clever chord progression and soothing melody makes it a song that reaches out to and touches many people, despite the language barrier.

THRONE

Following the announcement of their brand new single “VPL”, Brighton based five-piece THRONE are supporting The Dirty Cassettes at the shiny new Brighton Electric venue on November 30th. Influenced by alternative rock from the dark sounds of the 90’s, THRONE is quickly rising in popularity in the local music scene. With strong and raw female vocals, immersive synth tones that gives you the goosebumps and impressive guitar solos, this is an indie rock band with a touch of alternative that will either want you to get up and dance, or sit back and simply let the music move you.

TANX

Playing live for the first time in almost half a year, Tanx is back to take on An Indie Eve at The Brunswick. This five-piece is an indie rock influenced band with a mellow sound to move not only your soul, but your body. After releasing the two singles “Days With You” and “Screw Loose” in 2017, the band is currently working on their music in the studio, and hearsay is going around saying that it will be released very soon. In the meantime, come down to Hove to enjoy a night with emotional but upbeat indie tunes from Tanx.

CALEB HARRIS

Following the release of Harris’ upcoming single “The Reasons I Fear”, his release show will take place at the Prince Albert on January 16th next year, only the day before the single is released. Harris is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter based in Brighton with a deep but soothing voice using nothing but an acoustic guitar, or sometimes a banjo, mixing folk with indie rock. His previous single “Banshee” has 1000 listens on Spotify and has become a bit of a fan favourite and an anthem when performing it live. This is an event of early 2019 that cannot be missed.

OUR FAMILY DOG

There are only a few local bands that you definitely will have a hard time of forgetting after seeing live – and Our Family Dog is without doubt one of them. This six-piece can only be described as a very British version of Rage Against The Machine or Beastie Boys, or as they would describe it themselves; “A drunken ramblings of a man on a comedown from his adolescence”. This angry post-punk band will have you intrigued whether you are into heavy music or not – it is the atmosphere in the room and energy on stage that makes this more than a gig, but an experience.
